His father was Edmund Kanoldt (born March 13, 1845 in Großrudestedt died June 27, 1904 in Bad Nauheim. He was a German painter, draftsman, and illustrator. Later, the artist also worked as a muralist. He eventually settled down in Karlsruhe, where he became professor.
The elder Kanoldt started his education as a pupil of Friedrich Prellers in Weimar. Around 1870, he went to Rome.
