French Gilt and Bronze on Griotte Mantel Clock

French, circa 1890 – BELLE ÉPOQUE (a period in French and Belgian history that is conventionally dated as starting in 1871 and ending when World War I) GILT AND BRONZED METAL ON GRIOTTE (Griotte is a name given to marble or limestone which is deep cherry-red in color – Griotte is also French word meaning Morello cherry).  A young child  is opposite a bust of Virgil (a great ancient Roman poet) and a classically attired winged figure of Victory on a stylized circular rock base, inscribed “Hip Moreau” (French Dijon 1832-1927), raised on scrolling acanthus cast feet.
